The list on this site excludes councils in the larger cities. It is meant to be a tool to help people research property with a view to downsizing, making a sea change or a tree change.

Adelaide Hills Council is a local government area in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. It is in the hills east of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, and extends from the South Para Reservoir in the north to the Mount Bold Reservoir in the south.

The Adelaide Plains Council (formerly the District Council of Mallala) is a local government area in South Australia. It consists of a largely rural region along the Gulf St Vincent, covering a total area of approximately 926 km2. The council seat lies at Mallala, but it also maintains a service centre at Two Wells.

The City of Albany is a local government area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 410 kilometres (255 mi) south-southeast of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It covers an area of 4,312.3 square kilometres (1,665 sq mi), including the Greater Albany metropolitan area and the Port of Albany, as well as the surrounding agricultural district and some national parks. The City of Albany had a population of over 36,000 at the 2016 census.

Albury City Council is located in the Riverina region of New South Wales. The LGA covers an area of 313 km², and had a population of 48,629 in 2006. The city comprises the Albury urban area, and the suburbs and localities of Forrest Hill, Lavington, Thurgoona, Splitters Creek, Ettamogah, Bowna, Table Top and Wirlinga.

Alexandrina Council is a local government area in the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island region of South Australia. The Alexandrina Council was formed on 1 July 1997 by the amalgamation of the District Council of Port Elliot and Goolwa, the District Council of Strathalbyn and a portion of the District Council of Willunga. The council is divided into five wards: Nangkita Kuitpo, Angas Bremer, Port Elliot Middleton, Strathalbyn and Goolwa Hindmarsh Island.

The Alice Springs Town Council is a local government area in the Northern Territory. It is situated 1,498 kilometres (931 mi) south of the Darwin. The council governs an area of 327.50 square kilometres (126.45 sq mi) and had a population of 24,753 at the 2016 census.

The Alpine Shire is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of 4,787 square kilometres (1,848 sq mi) and at the 2016 Census had a population of over 12,000.

It includes the towns of Bright, Dinner Plain, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford. There are two unincorporated areas within the shire: the areas around Mount Hotham and Falls Creek.

The Rural City of Ararat is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the western part of the state. It covers an area of 4,230 square kilometres (1,630 sq mi) and at the 2016 Census had a population of over 11,000.

The Armidale Regional Council is a local government area in the New England and Northern Tablelands regions of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of the Armidale Dumaresq Shire with the surrounding Guyra Shire.

The Shire of Ashburton is one of the four local government areas in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, covering an area of 105,647 square kilometres (40,791 sq mi). It is named after the Ashburton River. It had a population of about 13,000 as at the 2016 Census, most of whom live in the mining towns or in nearby mining camps.
